Before anything, I want to pay my own small respects to the music icon that passed last week. That man was, and still is, the essence of what it is to be a superstar. He never conformed, not for a moment, and while I’ve never really listened to the musician the ‘being’ is something that will stick with me forever.
But music never stops, and this week’s Song of the Week is My Star by Australian hip-hop artist Tuka!
MC Tuka has released three studio albums as a solo artist, the latest of which – Life Death Time Eternal (2015) – features this song. His first movement in the hip-hop world, however, was with the group Thundermentals, who are still active and featuring Tuka to this day.
My Star feels like a really smooth piece of music! The beat and chorus remind me of the pop/hip-hop hybrid from the late 00’s, championed by artists such as Ne-Yo, and it carries this ‘new-retro’ feel throughout.
This is perfect background noise while you’re working – the type of thing you can imagine finding in a hipster-café somewhere. I’ll definitely be playing it while writing this week’s articles (which will hopefully be including the next Anime Pocket Review)!
As always, I hope you all have a purple week, with lots of love from The Culture Cove!
