This week’s Song of the Week is Positive Tension by British indie/alternative band Bloc Party.
Originating from East London, Bloc Party is still considered to be one of the best alternative UK bands of the noughties. Their 2005 debut album Silent Alarm – on which this song is featured at #3 – was met with widespread acclaim both in the UK and abroad. While they are still releasing music (their latest album Hymns was released in January), multiple hiatuses and member changes mean that the music now is slightly different to the style of the first albums.
Following on from Jamie xx last week, this is another example of some great English alternative music. Positive Tension is a good example of what Bloc Party likes to do, using classic band sounds and entwining it with clever electronic vibes to create something really cool, and probably close to the Punk genre. This is all fronted by Kele Okereke’s unique voice, which you’ll probably either get on with or really dislike depending on how you feel!
The album Silent Alarm is personally one of my favourite albums of all time, and features many great songs such as Banquet and Helicopter that are also definitely worth a listen if you’re a fan of the song above.
I really do hope you enjoy this song, and as always have a great week with lots of love from The Culture Cove!
