This week’s Song of the Week is Fashion by Holy Balm.
Holy Balm are an Australian indie-dance trio from Australia. Formed in 2006, they had to wait until 2012 for the release of their debut album, It’s You. After that they spent the majority of their time touring the USA with other artists on their US label Not Not Fun. Having not released anything since, they returned this year with a host of singles and their second album, Activity, which was released in August. The song Fashion is number 1 on that seven-song album, and is by a long way the most listened-to of their songs on streaming site Spotify (<31,000 compared to the next best, Clandestine, at <12,000).
While this song and last week’s song by Moullinex could both be classed as ‘indie disco’, they both have their own distinctive and excellent vibes. While last week’s was quite upbeat, this song is almost robotic and slightly darker, while still retaining a solid dance beat. Also, while this might seem like a strange statement at first, this song really does remind me of fashion. While I can’t necessarily think of any specific song a get this idea from, it reminds me generally of those 70s/80s songs that speak about the vanity and arrogance of the industry.
I really hope you enjoy listening to this classic-styled song, and as always have a great week with lots of love from The Culture Cove!
