Review written by Rachel Geiger
This English singer-songwriter has become extremely popular in such a short amount of time. The 21-year-old found hits with his two single “Did You Hear The Rain?” and “Budapest,” both of which are featured on this album.
“Did You Hear The Rain?” is a catchy song with sad yet beautiful lyrics. It’s a hard song not to enjoy.
If the first single George Ezra released didn’t reach people, “Budapest” certainly did. This is a song that just makes you happy whenever you listen to it. Ezra’s ridiculously deep voice is something that takes listeners by surprise, but not in a bad way. It makes him different from other artists. His tone of voice is very distinctive, which certainly helps since he just so happens to look like he belongs in a boy band. Seriously though, this song always manages to get stuck in my head and it’s not hard to see why. It’s well produced and the lyrics are simple enough to remember by heart.
It’s not hard to tell that Bob Dylan is George Ezra’s most prominent influence. His lyrics and his subdue approach to every song is very much similar to Dylan. They also both have the unique voices that manage to set them apart. The folk genre is yet another reason that George Ezra is such a unique new artist. He manages to make both folk and pop work and it ends up sounding really natural and not overstated at all. He doesn’t always go with the sad and ballad songs, Ezra also has songs like “Budapest,” they are fun to dance along with. Two of the louder more dance tracks are “Cassy O'” and “Barcelona,” are fun and lighthearted.
This is just an incredible debut album that proves what a remarkable young artist he is. This is certainly only the beginning for George and I look forward to hearing more from him in the near future!
