Scary Movie 4 PosterScary Movie 4

Starring Anna Faris, Craig Bierko, Regina Hall, Beau Mirchoff, Conchita Campbell

Directed by David Zucker

IMDB Rating: 5.1

I know, pretty random number to start on, right?
The fourth in the hugely successful horror spoof franchise, this might not appeal to all, but is still worth a laugh!

The movie follows Cindy (Faris), a caretaker in a haunted house, and her next door neighbour Tom (Bierko), father of teenager Robbie (Mirchoff) and young daughter Rachel (Campbell). When the earth is invaded by giant tripods (War of the Worlds), Cindy is told by the young boy who haunted her house how to save the world, leading everyone on an adventure through different horror movies.

As mentioned, this is less of a story and more taking the piss out of everything else. In terms of the quality of the jokes, there is definitely more hits than misses. Because it’s not a flat-out comedy there are moments where it does have to build the story (however little it is), and these moments where you’re just listening to the stupid characters can get boring and tedious. However, in between all these moments are really funny spoofs taking the mickey out of everything before it! It is a stupid funny though, one example being the Japanese boy who haunts Cindy’s home whose apparently speaking Japanese, but is really just saying Japanese words like ‘sushi’ and ‘Toshiba’. Whether you like it or not is down to your taste, but I personally found the majority of it very funny!

Anna Faris, who made her name being the star of the scary movie franchise when it started in 2000, is obviously a very funny person. Sure, the jokes are written for her and all she has to do is read them out, but she definitely knows what she’s doing with them, and pulls the majority of them off excellently! It does help that she has a naturally funny face, especially with her bulging eyes, but she still does well in this film. The rest of the acting performances were pretty average, with most of the work done for them by the array of writers (nine in total, six of them working solely on characters).

While there isn’t much to say about the directing in this film, it is worth noting that the director of Scary Movie 4, David Zucker, is a much respected name in the spoof game. Having co-wrote and directed Airplane, a film many consider to b the best spoof comedy of all time, and also having directed Naked Gun, Zucker’s name carries weight in the comedy business. That being said, the directing in comedy films is of little importance, and while he did okay, very few eyes are upon what he’s doing with the camera.

I fully understand why some don’t like this as a movie – I mean, why should we applaud them for undermining everyone else? However, you have to look at this as more like Family Guy the movie than a horror/comedy. If you’re looking for a legitimate funny story then this isn’t it, but if you’re looking to laugh at serious horror movies then there’s nothing better than this!
