Starring Sean Maguire, Carmen Electra, Kevin Sorbo, Ken Davitian, Travis Van Winkle
Directed and written by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer
IMDB Rating: 2.7(!)
From the double-act that brought you the Scary Movie franchise comes a sizeable swipe at Zack Snyder’s dramatic 300 films. Cheap, stupid, but very funny, this film is definitely not for the purists!
A spoof of the film 300, Meet the Spartans tells the story of Leonidas (Maguire) and his odd-job army of 13 warriors as they try to defend the homoerotic world of Sparta from the Persians.
As you would expect from Friedberg and Seltzer, Meet the Spartans is unrelentingly stupid. I personally think this brings their trademark stupidity from the renowned Scary Movie films, and turns it up. However, not all the jokes in this are that good. Plus, given how long ago this film was made, some of the jokes now come across as dated. References to Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Ugly Betty have less impact now than they would have done in 2008.
The acting in this film is good enough, however they couldn’t really go wrong. All of them were funny when required, particularly lead Sean Maguire and pretty-boy Travis Van Winkle who was very funny when on-screen. However any bad acting was diluted by the generally bad production quality of the film, and passed off as part-of-the-show.
The directing by Friedberg and Seltzer wasn’t very good. A lot of it looked cheap, easy and the film in general looked like it was made with a £100 budget. However, as mentioned earlier, all of this adds to the cheap silliness of the movie, so it’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Overall, this is as cheap a laugh as I’ve ever seen, but definitely not the worst film ever made like some people say. This is a laugh regardless of the production value, and a great film to watch with friends! I definitely haven’t seen such a cheap film, but I have definitely seen less entertaining films.
Also, as I’ve seen this film multiple times now I decided to make a note of all the references I noticed!
I’m sure I missed a few, but this just gives you some evidence as to how utterly stupid this film is. All of these are referenced at some point in the 82 minute film (not necessarily in this order, but close):
