In the wake of Interstellar, another stellar cast, led by one of Sci-Fi’s best directors, attempt to take the box-office by storm. The production value of this planetary survival film isn’t in doubt, but are Matt Damon and Ridley Scott still able to deliver the smash successes they both did in the 00’s?
Based on the novel by Andy Weir, The Martian stars Matt Damon as astronaut Mark Watney. On a trip to a hostile planet, Andy Weir goes missing. Presumed dead, his crew all head back home without him, unaware that he survived. Watney survives with what little supplies he has left, while trying to signal help from back home.
Okay, so I’ve just seen the trailer for the first time, having initially been put off by the poster. I was worried that this would be too serious, however that was totally misplaced. This looks almost tongue-in-cheek, and I hope that theme isn’t just for the trailer, as I think Matt Damon performs better in a role like that.
As mentioned earlier, there is a stellar cast behind this. Oscar winner Chiwetel Ejiofor, Fantastic Four star Kate Mara, funny-woman Kristen Wiig and Interstellar’s own Jessica Chastain just some of the names supporting Matt Damon in this movie!
There should also be little-to-no problems behind the camera, with Ridley Scott in the directors chair. The esteemed director of Sci-Fi classic Alien with three Oscar nominations to his name commands respect from the whole of cinema, and I honestly couldn’t think of a director better for this movie.
Set for release on the 2nd October in the USA, 30th September in the UK, I am now swayed into liking this movie! An incredibly capable cast, led by one of the genres best directors, this is sure to be a huge hit, much bigger than I expected it to be before seeing the trailer! In terms of its quality, I’m not completely convinced it’ll be challenging for any awards, but you never know…
