Raised in Melbourne, Australia by German parents, Annika Schmarsel – aka Alice Ivy – is already making a name for herself despite only creating electronic sounds under the name for around a year. The song Touch – featuring the vocals of Georgia Van Etten – is her debut single, released at the end of January this year, and has since been accompanied by two more songs, with a debut album expected later this year.

This is definitely not what you would call conventional. At first, Touch can appear as little more than a mess of sounds, beats and clippings of just general life. However, the more you listen and the more you invest into it, I personally got the feeling that this was actually something really personal. Touch shows incredible levels of artistic flair and confidence from Alice Ivy, and gives the impression of being taken on a journey through her neighbourhood – as if you’re in the back of her family’s car, just watching the world, her world, go by.

Yes, I am completely aware of how ridiculous that sounds, and it might well be ridiculous, but the fact that a song can provoke such a response, and such an emotive connection, should indicate to you how exciting this new artist is.

I hope you have the time to listen to this song. This is a very different style of music – our normal music is like a comic-book compared to the painting Alice Ivy attempts to portray – so I would totally understand if you didn’t get along with it. You won’t love it until you try it, though!

As always have a great week, with lots of love from The Culture Cove!
